WSL Thursday Recap: Mannebach’s no-hitter helps Giants split pair

The Oshkosh Giants split a Northeastern Baseball League doubleheader with the Green Bay Storm on Thursday night, falling in the opener 11-3
before bouncing back to take the nightcap 4-0.

Troy Mannebach tossed a no-hitter in the second game to lead the Giants to the win.

Bradley
Knoblock belted a solo home run in the nightcap, while Jeremy McCarty,
Robbie Kleman and Colton Demorrett each drove in runs for the Giants.

In the opener, each Giant starter had at least one hit, but the Storm took advantage of nine walks and three Oshkosh errors.

Sheboygan A’s 4, Appleton Legends 1

It took falling behind for the Sheboygan A’s to move ahead.

After
Appleton broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth, the
A’s answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to
collect a 4-1 win in a Northeastern Baseball League game at Wildwood
Park on Thursday night.

“I guess we were (just waiting for them to
score),” Carter Amundsen said. “We knew we had to score to win so it
was no big deal. It was just one run.”

Brandon Winfield tossed his
fifth complete game of the season to earn the win on the mound,
striking out five, while issuing just one walk.

The only run he allowed scored in via a wild pitch as he kept the Legends’ bats quiet the entire night.

“From
the start it felt really good,” said Winfield, who scattered eight hits
in improving to 6-3 on the season. “Just going with the fastball right
away and keep them off balance. Hayden (Fenner) called a great game.
It’s fun to work with them.”

Dylan Detert reached on an Appleton
error to start the sixth inning for the A’s, moved to second on a single
by T.J. McCoy and then scored on a hit-and-run single by Taylor Grimm
to tie the score and get the A’s on the board.

The Legends got the
second out of the inning but Tony Grannis then reached on catcher’s
interference to load the bases and Appleton hurler B.J. Chase uncorked a
wild pitch for another run. Amundsen then delivered a two-out, two-run
single to left field to cap the inning and give the A’s a 4-1 advantage.

“The
first pitch, when he threw it in the dirt and we got a run, it kind of
took the pressure off a little bit,” Amundsen said. “I was ahead so I
just sat on the fastball and he gave me one on the inside corner and I
turned on it.”

Winfield then took care of the rest.

“It’s
great,” Winfield said about getting the lead. “I can’t say enough about
the hitters. All year, if I give up a run or anyone gives up a run, they
come right back. It just fires you up.

“You know if you mess up
and have a bad inning, they are going to come right back and put up a
big number up on the board for you.”

Winfield blanked the Legends
for the first five innings but ran into some trouble in the sixth when
he allowed a lead-off single to Courtney Watkins who was then bunted to
second. Watkins stole third as Ben Morgan drew a walk and later scored
on a wild pitch with two outs for the game’s first run.

The Legends had chances to score earlier off of Winfield, but the A’s defense came up big.

Hayden
Fenner threw out an attempted base-stealer as part of a double play in
the second inning while Sheboygan turned a double play off a John
Hendrick line drive with runners at second and third in the fourth.

Sheboygan registered another inning-ending double play in the fifth inning.

The
A’s had their chances in the early innings as well but failed to score.
Detert grounded into a double play to end the third inning, while
Sheboygan stranded a runner at second in the second and left two runners
on base in the fourth.

Ryan and Grimm each finished with two hits for the A’s, while Watkins went 3-for-4 for the Legends.
