WSL Saturday Recap: Orioles Claim League Championship with Victory Over Kings

Lombard Orioles 7, 5, Kenosha Kings 4, 2

The Lombard Orioles and Kenosha Kings traded the lead nine times on Saturday in game one, but the Lombard Orioles ended up on top with a 7-4 win in seven innings over Kenosha Kings.

With the victory, the Lombard Orioles have captured the 2016 Wisconsin State League Championship. It is the Orioles’ 10th straight out right championship. They have also had at least a share of the title the past 13 seasons, and 15 of the last 16 seasons.

The Orioles managed to grab the lead after a strong seventh inning. The Orioles went up for good on a two-run double by Shawn Dunn off Jason Bunton, plating Ron Sessler and Hunter Fidrito.

Dunn had three extra-base hits for the Lombard Orioles.

Jason Dennis got a hit in each of his one at bats. He doubled in the fourth inning.

Jake Esp got the win, pitching two shutout innings. He struck out one, walked none and surrendered one hit.

Jason Bunton took the loss for the Kings. He allowed seven runs in seven innings, walked three and struck out seven.

The Kings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A double by Mark Cibrario, plating Jordan Weigold started the inning off.

The Orioles got one-run rallies in the fifth inning and the sixth. In the fifth, the Orioles scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Kings quickly matched the Lombard Orioles’ strong inning with a two-run inning of its own in the fifth. Kenosha Kings scored on a walk by Jason Dennis and a wild pitch.

In game two, Shawn Dunn drove in three runs, helping the Orioles to a 5-2 victory.

Shane Ritter brought the heat against Kings during his outing. The Kings managed just two hits off of Ritter, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during his four innings of work.

It was a good day at the plate for Kings’ Paul Pulera. Pulera went 2-3, drove in one and scored one run. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the fifth inning.

Kyle Kutzler was charged with the loss. He lasted just five innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed four runs.

Lombard Orioles closer Tom Bushnell put away the final six outs to record the save.

In the top of the first, the Lombard Orioles grabbed the early lead, 1-0. The Orioles attack began with a single from Mitch Boe. Then moved Boe from first to second.

The Kenosha Kings scored one run of its own in the first, scoring on a groundout by Garrett Bogucki.

Lombard didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring one run in the second inning when they scored on an RBI single by Zack Speaker.

A one-run fifth inning helped bring Kenosha within two. An RBI single by Pulera sparked the Kings’ rally. Finally, Tom Bushnell induced an inning-ending fly out from Schneider.

West Allis Nationals 6, De Pere Dodgers 1

An excellent effort by Aaron Woods carried the West Allis Nationals to a 6-1 win in seven innings over the De Pere Dodgers on Saturday in game one.

Woods looked sharp on the bump. The Dodgers managed just one hit off of Woods, who allowed no earned runs, walked three and struck out seven during his seven innings of work.

The Nationals scored three runs in the first inning to build an early lead, socring on an RBI single by Shey Smith and a two-run double by Jake Kolacinski.

Kolacinski racked up three RBIs on two hits for West Allis.

Jacob Reetz couldn’t get it done on the rubber for the Dodgers, taking a loss. He allowed six runs in six innings, walked one and struck out none.

In game two, the Nationals weren’t able to come back from the big hole they dug themselves into against the Dodgers, and lost 8-6 after falling behind by five runs in the fifth inning.

West Allis scored on an RBI double by Brian Huntzinger, an error, and an RBI single by Aaron Goecks in the fifth inning and a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning. Despite their efforts, the Nationals couldn’t finish the comeback.

Huntzinger racked up two RBIs on two hits for the West Allis Nationals.

Joe Baier got the win for the De Pere Dodgers despite allowing six runs over seven innings. He struck out six, walked six and surrendered seven hits.

Chad Tindall was charged with the loss. He allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings, walked six and struck out four.

De Pere didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring one run in the first inning when they scored on an RBI double by Jacob Watzka.

The Dodgers got two-run boosts in each of the second, third and fifth. In the second, they scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Nehring, bringing home Brendan Meissner.
